Rainy day plans in Glasgow — how do you sightsee when the weather’s bad?

Glasgow gets rain a lot, so honestly most locals just plan around it rather than hoping it clears up. Here’s how I’d sightsee on a proper wet day:

Museums/indoor stuff first:

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is the obvious one, free entry, huge collection, easily eats 2-3 hours and you’re fully dry the whole time. Riverside Museum (transport museum) is another good one, especially if you’re traveling with kids, interactive and covers a lot of ground indoors. Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in the city center if you want something smaller and quicker.

This is actually one of the better uses for hop on hop off Glasgow on a rainy day, most routes are covered/open-top-convertible or at least let you stay dry between stops instead of trudging between museums on foot in the rain. You’re not walking Glasgow’s sprawl in bad weather, you’re just hopping off right at the entrance, going in, then catching the next bus rather than waiting around outside getting soaked.

Other solid rainy day options:

The Lighthouse (Mackintosh building) is small but indoors and central. Merchant City has a lot of covered arcades and indoor shopping if you just want a low-key wander without getting drenched. Good coffee shop culture, honestly just building in longer café breaks between sights makes bad weather way more manageable.

What I’d skip in the rain:

Necropolis (atmospheric but muddy/slippery when wet, and there’s no shelter). Long outdoor walks through the West End parks, save that for a dry day.

TL;DR: lean into the museums (mostly free, genuinely excellent collections), and hop on hop off Glasgow is honestly more useful in bad weather than good, since it keeps you out of the rain between stops instead of walking Glasgow’s spread-out neighborhoods soaked.
